Greenwood High School track and field athletes opened their 2025 season in late February and have competed in four events to date. They participated in a pair of running festivals in Bentonville and Van Buren and two track and field meets at Van Buren and Alma. When students return from spring break next week, the GHS thinclads will compete in the Tiger Relays at Mansfield on Tuesday, April 1st, and at Siloam Springs on the 3rd. The annual Bulldog Relays at Smith-Robinson Stadium will be held on Thursday, April 10th. The teams are led by Head Coach Jason Gill.
Bentonville Running Festival
At Bentonville on February 27th, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs competed in a handful of running events, earning three top ten finishes among the GHS ladies. Led by several members of the talented GHS girls cross country team, two Lady Bulldogs placed in the top ten among hundreds of runners. Three other GHS girls finished in the top 20. Seven girls participated for Greenwood along with five Greenwood boys.
Julia Witherington ran seventh in two events to lead the way. In the 800-meter run she had a time of 2:37.95 before also running seventh in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:47.21. Teammate Piper Ames ran ninth in the 1600-meter event with a time of 6:00.06. Camryn Coston finished 11th in the 800-meter run crossing the finish line in 2:47.35. Carol Werner ran 13th in the 1600-meter event with a time of 6:07.77. Greenwood’s Gracie Goines finished 18th in the 800-meter run (2:57.04) and Lexi Gordon came in 30th with a time of 3:12.63.
On the boys side of things, the best GHS finish was by Andrew Rye who placed 31st in the 1600-meter run. Ridik Lawless ran 37th (5:19.84) in the same event and Miles Wead ran 45th (5:39.68). In the 800-meter run two Bulldogs finished 53rd and 56th overall. Rhett Williams was 53rd with a time of 2:23.51 and Ridik Lawless was 56th (2:27.31).
Van Buren Running Festival
A plethora of GHS athletes competed in this event, earning 12 top ten finishes among the Lady Bulldogs and 11 top ten placers among the Bulldogs. Four GHS ladies competed in the 100-meter dash with Daisy Farris placing 15th for their highest finish. Abbigail Booth, McKinley Rodebush, and Kristina Andrews also participated. In the 200-meter dash, Hadley Webb ran 10th and Daisy Farris ran 16th. Webb then finished second in the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:05.28.
In the 800-meter run, Greenwood’s Julia Witherington finished second (2:35.87) and Gracie Goines 11th (2:53.40). Witherington then ran second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:46.57. Piper Ames ran fifth (6:01.82) and Lexi Gordon was 14th. In the 3200-meter run, Carole Werner finished second (13:09.65), Piper Ames placed third (13:58.64), and Lexi Gordon fifth (14:45.12).
In the girls 100-meter hurdles, two GHS athletes placed in the top ten. Mazzy Van Lare was third with a time of 18.30 seconds while Meredith Finely placed ninth with a time of 19.48 seconds. The same two Lady Bulldogs placed in the 300-meter hurdles. Van Lare finished third (54.56) and Finely placed eight (58.44). The GHS 4x100 meter relay team also scored fifth place points with a time of 1:01.50.
For the GHS boys, Blaze Mcdaniel won the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.34 seconds, just ahead of teammate Kyston Quick in third place at 11.49 seconds. Champ Davis ran fifth with a time of 11.55 seconds, and Tremon Hunt was seventh (11.72). Other Bulldogs who competed in the event were Lawyer Thornsberry, Cooper Goodwin, Burroughs Wolfgang, Terry Mcginister, Parker Greenway, Deacon Cameron, and Rashaun West.
Nearly the same crew ran in the 200-meter dash with Kyston Quick leading the GHS pack in ninth place (24.35 seconds). Blaze Mcdaniel finished 10th (24.36) and Burroughs Wolfgang 11th. Tremon Hunt was 13th and Champ Davis 15th. Others who competed were Lawyer Thornsberry, Cooper Goodwin, Terry Mcginister, D.J. Dobbins, Parker Greenway, Deacon Cameron, and Rashaun West.
In the 400-meter dash, Rhett Holloway, D.J. Dobbins, Kobe Lewis, and Yadiel Garcia all competed but did not score. In the 800-meter run, Rhett Williams, Ridik Lawless, Miles Wead, and Jace Brown participated but did not score. But the Bulldogs did have a top ten finish in the 1600-meter run with Andrew Rye placing seventh with a time of 5:02.46. Ridik Lawless and Miles Wead also competed in the event. Rye also placed fourth in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:11.47.
In the 110-meter hurdles, Greenwood’s Silas Spicer placed sixth with a time of 17.85 seconds. Thomas Newcity finished in 13th place with a time of 20.41 seconds. In the 300-meter hurdles, Spicer finished eighth with a time of 46.10 seconds. Finally, the GHS 4x800 meter relay squad finished fifth with a time of 9:37.29.
Quad City Meet
On March 13th both GHS squads participated in the annual James Lemley Quad City meet held at Van Buren High School. The event included athletes from Greenwood, Alma, and both Fort Smith high schools, Northside and Southside. The GHS girls had 20 top ten finishes, and a larger contingent of GHS boys had 30 top ten placers. The Lady Bulldogs finished second overall with 77 points behind Fort Smith Northside (115) while the Bulldogs finished third with 58 points behind Fort Smith Southside (129) and Van Buren (110).
In the girls 100-meter dash Greenwood’s Daisy Farris finished in 10th place and Laura Bankuti ran 11th. Abbigail Booth finished 20th and Kristina Andrews was right behind in 21st place. In the 400-meter dash the Lady Bulldogs got a first-place finish by Hadley Webb with a winning time of 1:04.27. Pate Jones ran third (1:05.59) in the same event. Piper Ames finished fourth in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:48.54.
In the 1600-meter run the GHS girls dominated with four top six finishes. Julia Witherington ran second (5:47.94), Piper Ames ran third (5:54.99), Camryn Coston was fifth (5:59.52), and Carole Werner ran sixth (6:00.14). Three of those same ladies scored team points in the 3200-meter run, including Julia Witherington finishing second (12:51.69), Carole Werner third (13:14.50), and Camryn Coston in fourth place (13:44.95).
The Lady Bulldogs also scored well in the two hurdles events. Mazzy Van Lare finished first in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.44 seconds. Meredith Finely ran third in the same event with a time of 19.91 seconds. The same two athletes finished first and second in the 300-meter event. Van Lare ran first at 58.82 seconds while Finley was second at 1:00.08.
The GHS girls 4x200 meter relay team then ran fourth with a time of 2:08.27. In the long jump, Mazzy Van Lare returned to finish first with a leap of 16’-7½”. Laura Bankuti finished sixth (15’-2½”) and Daisy Farris finished seventh (15’-2¼”) for the Lady Bulldogs. Finally, in the triple jump, GHS senior Pate Jones finished third with a leap distance of 33’-1”.
For the GHS boys, Blaze Mcdaniel ran fourth (11.23 seconds) in the 100-meter dash, Kyston Quick ran sixth (11.40), and Drew Lowe ran eighth (11.60). Other Bulldogs who competed were Wesley Raggio, Deacon Cameron, and Parker Greenway. Mcdaniel also finished third (23.41 seconds) in the 200-meter dash, followed by Tremon Hunt in sixth place (24.02), Kyston Quick eighth (24.47), and Drew Lowe ninth (24.49). Wesley Raggio, D.J. Dobbins, Thomas Newcity, Deacon Cameron, and Yadiel Garcia also competed in the event.
In the 400-meter dash, Yadiel Garcia finished 11th, Kobe Lewis 12th, Parker Greenway 15th, and Jace Brown 16th. In the 800-meter run, Rhett Williams finished third with a time of 2:16.99 while Ridik Lawless ran 11th and Miles Wead 19th. In the 1600-meter run, Greenwood’s Andrew Rye finished ninth (4:47.20) while Ridik Lawless ran 12th and Miles Wead ran 14th. Rye also finished fourth in the 3200-meter and Rhett Williams ran sixth with a time of 12:24.69.
Thomas Newcity finished fifth (20.53 seconds) in the 110-meter hurdles and Burroughs Wolfgang was sixth (20.70). Rhett Holloway ran sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 47.79 seconds. Noah Myers ran seventh (48.23). All three GHS relay teams scored points in their respective events. The 4x100 meter squad finished second (44.40), the 4x200 meter team finished third with a time of 1:37.38, and the 4x400 meter quartet ran fifth (4:23.71).
Greenwood won the high jump when Easton Carter finished first with a leap of six feet even. Tremon Hunt was sixth at 5’-6” and Kobe Lewis finished in 11th place. The Bulldogs also won the long jump competition on the strength of Tremon Hunt’s first place performance with a leap of 21 feet even. D.J. Dobbins finished third (19’-8”), and Easton Carter eighth (18’-6”). Noah Myers, Yadiel Garcia, and Krish Bastola also competed.
D.J. Dobbins placed third (38’-10½”) in the triple jump and Noah Myers was fourth at 37’-7”. Rhett Holloway placed sixth in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 6’-6”, as did Greenwood’s Jace Brown, finishing seventh. Charlie Hudnall placed 13th in the discus throw at 65’-11”. Finally, in the shot put, Brock Shepard placed seventh (36’-11”), Cody Johnson eighth (35’-9¾”), Charlie Hudnall ninth (35’-4½”), and Sebastian Fernandez in 12th place (31’-7½”).
Airedale Relays
Last Friday, at the onset of spring break, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs traveled to Crawford County and Alma for the annual Airedale Relays. Twelve area teams participated with the GHS girls finishing third overall with 87 points behind Russellville (148) and Farmington (130). The GHS boys placed fifth overall with 69½ points behind Russellville (184), Farmington, Harrison, and Alma. The Lady Bulldogs had 18 top ten placers while the Bulldogs had 19. Only the top eight placers in each event scored points for their teams.
The GHS ladies ran two athletes in the 100-meter dash, with Daisy Farris coming in ninth (13.84 seconds) and Laura Bankuti ran 14th (14.43). Hadley Webb ran fifth (29.41) in the 200-meter dash with Daisy Farris coming in seventh (29.61). In the 400-meter dash, Hadley Webb earned first place points with a winning time of 1:03.42 while Pate Jones ran third (1:05.54).
In the distance events, the Lady Bulldogs racked up plenty of points, starting in the 800-meter run with Julia Witherington taking first place with a time of 2:32.39. Camryn Coston earned fifth place points (2:41.37). Skipping the 1600-meter run, the Greenwood girls earned second place points in the 3200-meter run with Carole Werner’s stellar performance (12:38.10).
In the hurdles, Mazzy Van Lare ran third (18.06) in the 100-meter event, while Meredith Finely placed sixth (19.17). In the 300-meter hurdles Van Lare ran fifth (55.15) and Finely ran sixth (55.50). Greenwood’s 4x100 meter relay team earned third place points with a time of 55.73 seconds. The 4x800 meter squad finished second with a time of 10:40.47.
In the long jump, Greenwood had three competitors with Van Lare finishing seventh (13’-8”), Daisy Farris coming in eighth (12’-11”), and Laura Bankuti finishing ninth (12’-10”). In the triple jump, multi-sport athlete (basketball, track) Pate Jones finished first and earned 10 points with a leap of 33’-2”.
For the Bulldogs, Drew Lowe ran third in the 100-meter dash with a time of 11.27 seconds. Blaze Mcdaniel ran fourth (11.32) and Kyston Quick placed seventh (11.58). In the 200-meter dash, Tremon Hunt ran fourth (23.96) for Greenwood with Kyston Quick placing sixth (24.35). The Bulldogs had three competitors in the 400-meter dash but scored no points. Terry Mcginister ran 11th, Rhett Holloway 13th, and Burroughs Wolfgang 15th.
In the longer races, Rhett Williams placed seventh in the 800-meter run while teammate Ridik Lawless ran 15th. In the 1600-meter event, Andrew Rye ran third with a time of 4:50.07. Ridik Lawless finished 11th and Miles Wead ran 14th. Andrew Rye also finished third in the 3200-meter run with a time of 10:39.91.
Silas Spicer placed seventh in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.46 seconds, while Bulldogs Noah Myers and Yadiel Garcia both participated in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing 13th and 15th, respectively. The Greenwood boys also racked up several points in the relay events. The 4x100 meter squad ran third with a time of 46.16 seconds. Likewise, the 4x200 meter team finished third (1:33.96) while the 4x800 meter squad placed fourth (10:03.67).
In the high jump, Greenwood’s Tremon Hunt finished eight (5’-6”) while three teammates participated in the long jump, including Hunt’s second place finish with a leap of 21 feet even. D.J. Dobbins was seventh (18’-8½”) and Noah Myers 14th. In the triple jump, Dobbins finished sixth with a leap of 38’-3” while Myers finished eighth (37’-0”). In the other field events, Brady Perminter finished 15th in the discus throw. Brock Shepard placed eighth in the shot put with a heave of 36’-8½”. Cody Johnson finished ninth (35’-11”), and Charlie Hudnall placed 12th at 34’-1”.
