GHS tennis teams pass halfway point in ’24 schedule

The two Greenwood High School tennis teams have now surpassed the midpoint of their brief 2024 season with four or five regular season matches remaining before the conference tournament, October 7-8, and a chance to reach the state tournament the following week. Greenwood’s planned trip to Van Buren last Thursday was washed out and no date for rescheduling the match has yet been set. They will play Farmington and Shiloh Christian on Tuesday this week at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. They will return to Russellville on Thursday to take on the Cyclones and Lady Cyclones.

To this point, Head Coach Dexter Pearcy and volunteer assistant Randy Magness have watched their GHS netters compete well against Russellville, Siloam Springs, Farmington, Shiloh Christian, and Alma, all members of the 5A West. Through the first half of the league slate, conference coaches are taking notes and learning how to best seed their players for a fair and competitive conference tournament.

Greenwood vs. Siloam Springs - 08/27/24

On the last Tuesday in August, the GHS girls and boys took on both Siloam Springs and Harrison at Arkansas Tech University. Against the Lady Panthers, the Lady Bulldogs won three of their four matches. The Greenwood boys split their two matches with the Panthers.

Harper Berg won her match in dominant fashion, 4-0, 4-0, and Emma Koenigseder won her match, 5-3, 4-1. In girls doubles play, Mackenzie Magness and Kylah Pearcy also rolled to an easy win, 4-0, 4-1, and the GHS team of Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland dropped their match, 4-5, 0-4.

In boys singles action, Caleb Schaefer won his contest, 4-2, 4-1, but #2 Wesley Jarrell lost his match, 0-4, 2-4. In doubles play, the Bulldogs split those matches with the duo of Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer winning 4-0, 2-4, and 11-8. The team of Thomas Veatch and Hayes Whitson lost in straight sets, 0-4, 0-4.

Greenwood vs. Harrison - 08/27/24

On that same day, the Lady Bulldogs went 3-1 against the Lady Goblins of Harrison, while the GHS boys went 1-3 against the Goblins. The Greenwood girls dropped only one doubles match while the Bulldogs’ only win came in their #1 doubles contest.

Harper Berg won her singles match, 4-0, 4-2, while Emma Koenigseder won her match, 5-4 (7-1), and 4-1. In doubles play, the team of Magness and Pearcy continued their early season dominance by winning 4-2, 5-4 (7-1). The pairing of Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland dropped their match, 4-0, 2-4, 5-10.

The Greenwood boys dropped both singles matches. Caleb Schaefer lost 1-4, 2-4, and Wesley Jarrell fell 0-4, 0-4. In doubles competition, the due of Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer salvaged one match for the Bulldogs, winning 2-4, 4-0, 10-2. Partners Thomas Veatch and Hayes Whitson lost, 0-4, 0-4.

Greenwood vs. Russellville - 08/29/24

In team play, the Lady Bulldogs split their four varsity matches with the Russellville girls, 2-2. On the boys side, the Bulldogs and Cyclones also split, 2-2, in their first meeting of the season at Greenwood in late August. The GHS girls won in #1 singles play and their #1 doubles matches. The Greenwood boys took the #1 singles match and the #2 doubles match.

Greenwood’s Harper Berg won handily over Russellville’s Liza Parker, 6-2, 6-1. Also in singles play, Lady Bulldog Emma Koenigseder lost a very close match to Izzi White, 5-7, 4-6. In junior varsity singles action, Greenwood’s Charlie Vaughn lost to Russellville’s Isabel Rivas, 0-8.

In girls doubles action, the #1 GHS duo of Mackinzie Magness and Kylah Pearcy won easily, 6-2, 6-3, but the #2 doubles squad of Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland lost their match, 1-6, 4-6. In junior varsity play, the GHS doubles pairing of Izzy Espinosa and Daisy Farris won, 8-6. Greenwood’s Mingyue Vass and Lauralei O’Connor also teamed up for a very competitive match, losing 5-6, 4-6. Finally, the doubles duo of Alivia Kittell and Madison Mgyuen lost, 1-4, 1-4.

In #1 singles play, Greenwood’s Caleb Schaefer defeated Russellville’s Samuel Barbarek, 6-1, 6-3. But the Cyclones won the other two singles matches. GHS #2 varsity player Wesley Jarrell lost his match in straight sets, 0-6, 0-6. Bulldog Sawyer Harry also lost, 0-8.

In varsity doubles action, Greenwood’s Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer won, 4-6, 6-1, and 10-7. But the #2 GHS doubles team of Thomas Veatch and Hayes Whitson fell, 2-6, 0-6. In junior varsity play, Sawyer Harry and Jon David Hefflin lost, 2-8, and Noah Brown and Weston King lost, 5-8.

Greenwood vs. Farmington - 09/03/24

The first matches of the new month after Labor Day were against both Farmington and Shiloh Christian at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. Against Farmington, Greenwood went 2-2 in both girls and boys varsity play, each splitting their singles and doubles matches.

In a rare loss, Greenwood’s #1 singles player Harper Berg dropped her match in a tiebreaker, falling 1-4, 4-0, and 7-10. But #2 singles player Emma Koenigseder picked up her teammate by winning her match, which was also extended by a tiebreaker in the first set, 5-4 (7-4). She won the second set, 4-0. In girls doubles action, the GHS duo of Mackenzie Magness and Kylah Pearcy won their match, again in extra play, winning 4-2, 4-5 (4-7), and 10-5. But partners Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland lost their match, 0-4, 4-2, and 4-10.

On the boys side of things, #1 Caleb Schaefer won his match, 2-4, 4-1, and 10-4. Greenwood’s Wesley Jarrell lost his match, 2-4. In doubles play, the Bulldog pairing of Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer won their match, 4-0, 4-0, while Thomas Veatch and Jon David Hefflin dropped their match, 0-4, 3-5.

Greenwood vs. Shiloh Christian - 09/03/24

That same day the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs competed against the Saints and Lady Saints of Springdale’s Shiloh Christian. The GHS girls held their own, going 2-2, while the Greenwood boys fell to Shiloh, 1-3. The Lady Bulldogs split their two singles and doubles matches. The Bulldogs managed to win just one doubles match.

Harper Berg took her match easily in straight sets, not losing a single game, winning 4-0, 4-0. Greenwood’s Emma Koenigseder dropped her match, 1-4, 0-4. The Lady Bulldogs’ duo of Magness and Pearcy won their match with ease, 4-1, 4-2, while the team of Martin and Holland fell, 1-4, 1-4.

The only boys match won by Greenwood was in #1 doubles play. Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer won in straight sets by identical scores of 4-0, 4-0. The duo of Thomas Veatch and Jon David Hefflin were defeated by Shiloh’s #2 doubles team, 1-4, 0-4. In singles play, Caleb Schaefer fell, 1-4, 2-4. Wesley Jarrell also dropped his match, 0-4, 0-4.

Greenwood @ Alma - 09/05/24

On Thursday, August 5th, Greenwood traveled to Crawford County and played a full slate of varsity and junior varsity matches against rival Alma. Overall, the GHS varsity girls won 3-1, while the Greenwood varsity boys went 2-2. Alma won four of the six JV matches between the two schools.

Greenwood dominated the girls singles action. Harper Berg won her #1 singles match, 6-0, 6-0, and Emma Koenigseder won her #2 singles match by the same lopsided scores. Mackenzie Magness and Kylah continued their fine season, winning the #1 doubles match (no score available), while the GHS duo of Taelyn Martin and Alivia Kittell lost a close one, 5-7, 4-6.

In girls junior varsity play, Greenwood’s Mingyue Vass and Laurali O’Connor teamed up for a 6-4 victory. Izzy Espinosa and Daisy Farris also partnered to win their match, 6-1. But the GHS team of Madison Nguyen and Charlie Vaughn lost, 5-6, to round out the ladies’ scores.

In boys play, Greenwood’s Caleb Schaefer won his #1 singles match by identical scores of 6-4.  Wesley Jarrell lost his match, 0-6, 3-6. In varsity doubles play, the duo of Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer won their match handily, 6-0, 6-0. But the GHS team of Thomas Veatch and Hayes Whitson lost, 0-6, 3-6.

In junior varsity singles actions, Greenwood’s Sawyer Harry lost 1-6, while Jon David Hefflin fell, 4-6. In JV doubles play, Greenwood’s pairing of Noah Brown and Weston King lost their match, 3-6.

Greenwood vs. Siloam Springs - 09/10/24

In their second go-around with the Lady Panthers, the Lady Bulldogs bested their earlier performance in August, winning all four matches at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. But the Greenwood boys weren’t so fortunate, dropping all four of their matches against the Panthers.

Harper Berg won her singles match, 4-1, 4-2, while teammate Emma Koenigseder won in even more convincing fashion, 4-0, 4-0. The team of Mackenzie Magness and Kylah Pearcy were nearly as efficient, dispatching their opponents, 4-1, 4-0, while the GHS duo of Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland won their contest, 5-4, 4-1.

In boys play, Greenwood’s Caleb Schaefer fell 1-4, 4-5 and Wesley Jarrell lost, 2-4, 1-4, while in doubles action the team of Hefflin and Schaefer dropped their match, 1-4, 4-5, and GHS partners Veatch and Whitson lost 2-4, 1-4.

Greenwood vs. Harrison - 09/10/24

Also last Tuesday, the GHS girls went 2-2 against the Lady Goblins after winning three of four matches in their earlier meeting two weeks prior. As for the Bulldogs, they repeated their earlier performance, winning one of three matches against the boys from Crooked Creek.

Harper Berg was beaten in #1 singles play, 1-4, 2-4, while teammate Emma Koenigseder won her #2 singles match, 4-2, 4-0. In doubles competition, the duo of Mackenzie Magness and Kylah Pearcy won handily, 4-2, 4-0. In #2 doubles, the GHS team of Taelyn Martin and Klaire Holland were beaten in straight sets by identical scores of 0-4.

In boys play, the only GHS victory came in #1 doubles action when the duo of Lucas Hefflin and Alex Schaefer won easily, 4-2, 4-2. Thomas Veatch and Hayes Whitson lost their match, 2-4, 1-4. In singles play, Caleb Schaefer was beaten in straight sets, 0-4, 0-4, and Wesley Jarrell fell, 5-4, 0-4.
