Lady Bulldogs extend winning streak to nine straight

The Greenwood girls’ volleyball team is on a roll. Since dropping their season-opening match at Class 6A Fayetteville, the Lady Bulldogs have won nine consecutive matches. That includes recent victories over Siloam Springs, Mountain Home, and Alma and a forfeit by Bentonville-West on September 14th.

All three lives matches were 3-0 straight set wins over conference opponents, and two of them were on the road. On the 17th Greenwood traveled to Siloam Springs and won 25-9, 25-8, and 26-24. On the 22nd the Lady Bulldogs hosted the Lady Bombers of Mountain Home, winning handily, 25-18, 25-13, and 25-19. Then last Thursday the 24th Greenwood made the short trip to Alma, winning all three sets by double-digits, 25-15, 25-11, and 25-10.

At Siloam Springs, the Lady Bulldogs were led offensively by senior Hannah Watkins with 12 kill shots. Fellow senior Larkin Luke added eight kills, as did freshman Myia McCoy. Senior Caylee Ciesla also had five kills.

Luke and fellow senior Anna Johnson both had three service aces and Luke added three blocks at the net. Senior Jocelyn Sewell led the team in digs with 13 while senior Sami Stilley had 10. Johnson and senior teammate Madison Pugh both added nine digs each. Johnson also led the team in assists with 32. Sewell led with 12 service returns.

Against Mountain Home, the GHS girls were again paced by Watkins with 12 kills to power the offense. McCoy added nine as did Caylee Ciesla. Jocelyn Sewell had three service aces and Anna Johnson led the team with 29 assists.

Defensively, Pugh and Johnson both had 10 digs, while Sewell and senior Allison Rose both had six and Stilley had five. Rose led the team in service receptions with 14, followed by Pugh and Sewell with 11 each.

Last week at Alma, Head Coach Jennifer Golden and her team cruised to an easy three-set victory over the Lady Airedales behind the net play of Caylee Ciesla, who had 10 kills, and Hannah Watkins with nine slams. Myia McCoy had five kills.

Jocelyn Sewell had three service aces and Larkin Luke had eight blocks to lead the team. Sewell also led in digs with eight, followed by Rose with seven and Pugh with five. Johnson had 26 assists and Pugh had 12 service returns while Stilley had nine. Rose and Sewell both had five returns.

In addition to their winning streak, the Lady Bulldogs remain unbeaten in 5A West conference play. They were scheduled to complete the first half of the league race this Tuesday at home against Greenbrier. On Thursday they will begin their second tour through the league schedule with a home match against Russellville.
