Coach John Kincade is now in his fifth season at the head of the GHS wrestling program, and by all measures he's been very successful so far, having already mentored several state champions. But he also knows that continued success on the varsity level depends on creating interest and building skills among younger athletes.
To that end, Kincade has been very busy this season splitting his time and efforts between the varsity Bulldogs and dozens of youth wrestlers who aspire to be Bulldogs in the future.
On January 21st the coach and the GHS wrestling booster club hosted a major youth tournament at H.B. Stewart Arena that attracted nearly 275 young wrestlers from Eastern Oklahoma and Western Arkansas.
Last weekend Greenwood's youth wrestling team, known as the Warthawgs, participated in the youth state wrestling tournament at Fayetteville, finishing fourth out of 19 teams. The following results were provided by Coach Kincade:
Division I (6 & under): Ty Kennedy - 1st @ 37 lbs. and Gavin Bracamontes - 2nd @ 60 lbs.
Division II (8 & under): Ridick Lawless - 52 lbs. and Gavin Wilkinson - 52 lbs.
Division III (10 & under): Jackson Witherington - 3rd @ 67 lbs., Parker Branton - 4th @ 67 lbs., Farah Crossno - 70 lbs., Dawson Miller - 3rd @ 73 lbs., Gavin Monchamp - 1st @ 76 lbs., Malachi Yoder - 2nd @ 80 lbs., and Gage Hanna - 100 lbs.

Varsity wrestling
The Greenwood Bulldogs are nearing the end of their regular season, and took part in the Maverick wrestling tournament at Okmulgee, Oklahoma on January 27-28. The 'Dogs finished sixth out of 19 teams with 108 points.
Four GHS wrestlers especially distinguished themselves at the event. Freshman Colton Tuck placed 4th @ 120 pounds, Dylan Wilson finished 4th @ 138 pounds, senior Austin Collins placed 4th @ 220 pounds, and junior Jon Womack won 1st place in the heavyweight class.
