Over the past two weeks the GHS Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs each competed in their respective state golf tournaments. The girls’ event was played on October 1st at Paragould, while the boys’ tournament was held this past Monday, October 7th at Glenwood Country Club.
Head Coach Tyler Woods and his Bulldogs placed fourth overall in a field of 12 teams. This was Woods’ first season as a high school golf coach. He also coaches boys soccer.
Greenwood finished behind first place Jonesboro (320), second place Hot Springs Lakeside (333), and third place Little Rock Christian (336). The Bulldogs fired a collective score of 346.
Individually, junior Brady Fein carded an 80 to earn All-State honors, followed by senior Cade Shrum (84), junior Hayden Weaver (89), senior Landon Tuck (93), and junior Ethan Clark (98). Only the top four performances were counted toward team scores.
“I was proud of the way our guys fought,” said Coach Woods. “We didn't play our best golf, but fourth place in the state is something to be proud about.
“We’re going to miss our two seniors next year, Shrum and Tuck. We will [need] a couple of younger kids to step up in their place. It helps that we will be returning our top three players. All of them will be seniors.
As for the Lady Bulldogs, they finished as runners-up behind state champion Hot Springs Lakeside, which led the field with a score of 216. The Greenwood girls finished 33 strokes back at 249.
“Our girls played very well as a team,” said Ronnie Sockey, also in his first season as the Lady Bulldogs’ head coach after assisting former head coach Ronnie Williams last season.
“We had two girls shoot an 81,” he said of senior Ella Austin and sophomore Hallie Jones. Both girls made the All-State team.
Sophomore Grace Wood followed with an 87 and junior Olivia Walker shot a 99. The top three scores accounted for the team total of 249.
