The GHS girls and boys track and field teams will take part in the 5A West conference meet on Thursday this week at Vilonia. The Panthers are a track and field powerhouse in Class 5A.
In preparation for the upcoming conference and state meets, the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs recently competed at Van Buren and Fort Smith Southside.
Van Buren
On April 12th the GHS teams traveled across the Arkansas River for the annual Pointer Relays, one of 12 teams to participate. The Bulldogs placed sixth overall with 18 points, while the Lady Bulldogs finished seventh, also with 18 points.
For the GHS boys, the top performer was senior sprinter Max Vickery with a third-place finish in the 200-meter dash (23.16) and fourth place in the 100-meter dash (11.62).
Ryan Farr was seventh (55.51) in the 400-meter dash and Patrick Kelleher placed eighth in the high jump at 5’6”.
The 4x800-meter relay team also ran fifth and scored points with a time of 9:40.06.
For the Lady Bulldogs the long-distance running duo of Macie Cash and Taylor Koeth accounted for most of Greenwood’s points.
Both girls ran in the 1600-meter event with Koeth placing fifth (5:36.99) and Cash sixth (5:38.17).
Cash also finished sixth in the 800-meter run (2:40.73), while Koeth earned third place points in the 3200-meter run with a time of 11:47.66.
Junior Jaelin Glass was also seventh in the high jump at 4’6”, earning two points.
Bentonville easily bested the other teams in winning both the girls and boys competition.
Southside
The annual McDonald Relays were held at Jim Rowland Stadium in Fort Smith last Thursday, April 18th, with a huge field of 24 area teams in attendance.
The GHS boys placed 10th overall with 18 points. The Lady Bulldogs finished 11th with 21½ points. Vilonia High School won both halves of the meet by wide margins. Russellville finished second among the girls and Southside placed second among the boys.
For Greenwood, the boys got a third-place finish from Nathaniel Gonzales in the 1600-meter run with a time of 4:50.31. Max Vickery also placed in two events.
Vickery ran fourth (23.11) in the 200-meter dash and seventh in the 100-meter dash (11.44).
The Bulldogs also got points from two of their relay teams. The 4x400 meter squad ran fifth with a time of 3:42.43, while the 4x800 meter team earned one point with an eighth place finish (9:56.26).
For the GHS ladies, it was once again the duo of Cash and Koeth that scored the bulk of the points, with a little help from Jaelin Glass, who placed seventh in the high jump, clearing the bar at 4’8”.
Koeth ran third (5:34.51) and Cash ran sixth (5:40.05) in the 1600-meter event. Cash also placed sixth (2:38.15) in the 800-meter run. Koeth finished second (11:54.55) in the grueling 3200-meter run.
