The Greenwood High School tennis team traveled to Russellville on September 3rd and defeated the Cyclones in both girls' and boys' competition. Russellville managed to win only two matches. Greenwood won all of the varsity doubles matches.
The duo of junior Maria Geoly and sophomore Lindsay Gills won their doubles match 8-1. Juniors Hailey Rice and Kristen Keen won 8-2. In #3 girls' doubles, the GHS duo of senior Laura Scherff and freshman Amber Alzofari won 8-2.
In boys' doubles, Greenwood juniors Andrew Anderson and Paxton Evans easily dominated their opponents, 8-1. Sophomore "Woody" Woodring and senior Ethan Walker also won, 8-2. Then Woodring and Walker, considered Greenwood's #2 doubles team, also defeated Russellville's #1 doubles team.
In girls' singles play, Greenwood sophomore Jenna Ryloko lost 0-8 and junior Darian Wilson lost 6-8. In boys' singles, GHS freshman Kenny Sweeney won his match, 8-6, while junior Johnny Tammarath won by an identical score. In #3 girls' singles, Greenwood sophomore Hanna Swilling won 9-7.
In junior varsity action, Carson Loyd won 8-1 and Auston Shown won 6-0. Greenwood's varsity squad travels to Conway this Thursday, Sept 10, to play Jonesboro and Marion at the UCA tennis courts. The team is coached by Dr. Ken Hamilton, assisted by Ted Childers.
