The Greenwood girls and boys tennis teams opened up their 2017 season last Thursday on the road in Northwest Arkansas against Rogers Heritage. The teams are coached by Dr. Ken Hamilton, now in his 21st season with the Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs.
Though greatly outnumbered by Rogers (40 kids), Greenwood did very well in both singles and doubles play. Senior Woody Woodring and junior Kenney Sweeney were winners as the number one doubles duo and the #1 and #2 singles players, respectively.
In girls play, senior Lindsay Gills won her singles match in straight sets, as did sophomore Olivia Gaston.
Gills and sophomore Abigail Woodring won in doubles, as did the team of Gaston and sophomore Madie Pelt.
All eleven girls and six boys from Greenwood competed in both singles and doubles play, a combination of varsity and junior varsity matches.
Of the season-opening tussle, Hamilton said, “All players competed very well for this early in the season, and [I’m] proud of their efforts.”
The coach added that Greenwood’s 11 girls are vying for just six varsity positions on the team.
This past Tuesday’s scheduled match with Pulaski Academy at Arkansas Tech University in Russellville was cancelled due to inclement weather. The next match will be with Van Buren at the Greenwood community tennis courts this Thursday at 3:30 p.m.
