The GHS Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs have been burning up the links for the past two months, even before the start of the school year. The Greenwood ladies went unbeaten while the men lost only one match, and their excellent play carried over to the 5A West conference tournament held this past Monday at Ben Geren Park in Fort Smith.
Greenwood was the host school for the event, and the Lady Bulldogs won the girls’ competition, with the GHS boys finishing second. Other schools that participated included Alma, Russellville, Siloam Springs, Greenbrier, Vilonia, Beebe, and Little Rock Christian.
The Greenwood girls combined to shoot a tournament-low 262 over the 18-hole event, eight shots better than Siloam Springs (271) and Greenbrier (271). Little Rock Christian (314) and Russellville (355) finished fourth and fifth, respectively.
For the Lady Bulldogs, junior Jordyn Lane led the way with a team-best 85, finishing as the medalist runner-up in the tournament and earning All-Conference honors.
Senior Jaylee Mohteau fired an 87, junior Ella Austin a 90, and freshman Hallie Jones a 98 to round out the GHS scores. Mohteau and Austin also earned All-Conference status.
The Lady Bulldogs, defending 6A state champs, will next compete in the new 5A state tournament in Hot Springs on September 26th.
The Bulldogs (312) fell 15 strokes short of first place winner Little Rock Christian (297), but well ahead of third place Siloam Springs (329), fourth place Greenbrier (378), fifth place Vilonia (379), sixth place Alma (394), seventh place Beebe (400), and last place Russellville (408).
As usual, leading the way for the GHS boys was senior Evan Griffith, who carded a tournament best five-under-par 67 to earn medalist honors and All-Conference recognition.
Sophomore Brady Fein (79), senior Bradley Brotherton (82), sophomore Hayden Weaver (84), and junior Landon Tuck (85) accounted for the rest of the GHS scoring, with the top four scores counted in the team total. Fein was also chosen as All-Conference.
The Bulldogs qualified to play in the 5A state tournament in Paragould on October 2nd, but will continue to play and practice in preparation for the event. They have an 18-hole match scheduled with Fayetteville and Siloam Springs on Thursday.
In earlier matches prior to the conference tournament, the GHS boys’ and girls’ golf teams were finishing up against their regular season opponents, including Van Buren on September 4th.
Greenwood traveled to Eagle Crest golf course in Crawford County to take on the Pointers and Pointerettes, and the Bulldogs came away with a 166-183 win in the nine-hole match.
The ‘Dogs were led by Evan Griffith, who continued his amazing year with a 36. Brady Fein and Landon Tuck were just a few strokes behind Griffith at 41 and 43, respectively.
Bradley Brotherton, Hayden Weaver, and Cameron Adams finished the scoring for Greenwood with rounds of 46, 47, and 49 respectively. This win kept the GHS boys perfect for the season.
The Lady Bulldogs also played well against Van Buren and walked away with a win to remain undefeated. Greenwood was led by Jordyn Lane (43), followed by Ella Austin (46) and Grace Woody (46). Hallie Jones and J.J. Mohetau were right behind them with scores of 47 and 48, respectively.
Two days later, on September 6th, the ‘Dogs and Lady Bulldogs traveled to Blossom Way golf course in Rogers to take on Rogers Heritage and Deer High School, and Greenwood walked away with two more wins for the season.
The GHS girls shot a combined 138 to win two matches and move their season mark to 9-0. Greenwood was led by Mohteau, who scored a 43. Austin was right behind her, finishing with a 45. Hallie Jones, Jordyn Lane, and Grace Woody wrapped up the win for Greenwood with a 50, 51, and 52, respectively.
Evan Griffith led the pack again for the GHS boys against Rogers Heritage and Deer, shooting a 34. Tuck tacked on a strong performance for Greenwood with a 39. Bradley Brotherton carded a 43 while Fein and Weaver notched a 40 and 48, respectively.
Last Thursday, September 13th, the GHS teams split their match with the Southside Mavericks at Ben Geren in Fort Smith. The Bulldogs (161) narrowly lost to Southside (158) for their first defeat of the season (10-1). Greenwood was led by Bradley Brotherton (39), Hayden Weaver (40), Evan Griffith (40) and Brady Fein (42).
The Greenwood girls (138) remained undefeated (11-0), beating Southside by 14 strokes (152). The Lady Bulldogs was led by Jordyln Lane, who carded a team-best 45, followed by freshman Grace Woody (46), Ella Austin (47), J.J. Mohetau (49), and Hallie Jones (50).
