The Greenwood High School girls' and boys’ bowling teams both qualified for the 5A state tournament after finishing among the the top five teams in the 5A West conference tournament last Friday in Conway.
The Lady Bulldogs came into the league tournament scorching hot, boasting an 11-3 record on the season against teams from Fort Smith and the surrounding area.
Squad members include former state champion Madison Zollicoffer, Faith O’Mahony, Alex Thompkins, Mariah Hamilton, M.K. Tatum, and Izabelle Andrews.
The Greenwood ladies battled hard throughout the day before finishing in fifth place, good enough to qualify them for the state tournament.
The GHS boys entered last Friday’s contest 6-7 on the season, and also needed a top five finish out of 11 schools to earn a state tournament bid.
The Bulldogs bowled three regular games, then bowled four Baker games. A Baker contest involves five individual team members alternating with each frame, with all five getting two frames in one game.
After the first match Greenwood was in fourth place, and the 'Dogs maintained their hold on fourth all the way to the finish line to capture a state tournament berth.
The varsity team includes Josh Taylor, Nolan Brasher, Ry Bullington, Josh Teeter, Cameron Adams, Ryan Hankins, and Nick Yowell.
After the conference tournament, Head Coach Trey Holloway said, “I'm proud of how we bowled. We had some bowlers really step up. Josh Teeter and Mariah Hamilton did great, and both earned all-conference honors.
"We will all have to bowl well, one through six, to have a chance for the state championship,” he added.
The 5A state tournament was held in Conway this past Wednesday, but results were not available at press time.
