The Greenwood High School girls and boys soccer teams were busy last week, with each squad playing a trio of opponents in the two-day Fort Smith Classic, followed by matches at Fort Smith Southside last Monday and Mena last Wednesday. With spring break this week, both teams will get several days off before resuming play next week.
Both Greenwood teams went 2-1 in tournament play at Fort Smith Southside, March 9-10. The Lady Bulldogs defeated Little Rock Episcopal and Fort Smith Northside, but lost to Fayetteville, which won the girls tournament championship. The GHS boys won a 5-4 offensive shootout with Mena in the first round of tournament play, with Adam McFain, Jose Soroeta, Avery Sinkuler, Kevin Jones, and Brandon Williams all scoring goals. They then won a defensive struggle over Fort Smith Northside. Hoyt Smith scored the lone goal in the 1-0 win. That put the Bulldogs in the finals against the home team, Fort Smith Southside, but the Rebels pulled out the victory to claim the tournament title.
Both Greenwood teams were right back at Southside last Monday, March 12th, in a pair of regularly scheduled matches. The GHS girls battled the Lady Rebels to a 0-0 tie behind a strong performance by freshman goalkeeper Megan Hartness. In the second match, the Bulldogs again lost to Southside, this time by a score of 3-1. Senior Ryan Lensing scored the only goal for Greenwood.
Last Wednesday afternoon and evening Greenwood hosted its first regular season matches at Smith-Robinson Stadium. The opponent was Mena and the end results were two victories for the home teams. The Lady Bulldogs won 2-0 behind goals from Brae Gish and Piper Hartness. The GHS boys won 5-1 with two goals from freshman Kevin Jones, and single goals from junior Colton McEvoy and seniors Ryan Lensing and Adam McFain. Both Greenwood teams return to action on Tuesday, March 27th at Huntsville, before hosting Harrison on Friday, March 30th.
