The boys Soccer team wins the RVI tournament in Fort Smith on March 13th . The Bulldogs advanced throughout the day by beating Poteau 1-0, DeQueen 2-0. They met with Northside for the Championship game.
The “play of the day” went to Senior Kalee Simmons, who threw in the ballfrom out of bounds and directly into the Northside goal! The goal resulted in a controversial ruling as the officials declined the goal. In the past, Arkansas rules that govern high school soccer states that when the ball is thrown in from out of bounds the ball must make contact with a player on the field before entering the goal. This year the rule has changed making it possible to score a goal from a throw-in.
Coach Young walked onto the field to protest only to have the officials stand by their ruling. Coach Young visibly frustrated threw down his visor as he walked off the field. Fortunately, the call had no impact on the outcome of the game as the Bulldog defense was able to dominate, keeping Northside from scoring. Greenwood beat 7A Northside 1-0 securing the 1st place tournament title.
“Great results for the boys,” Coach Young said, when asked about the boys soccer team winning the River Valley Invitational. “Defense and goal keeper Spencer Griffin did not allow a goal in three games. Inaki Soroeta has been a great leader offensively all year for us. But other players, including Ryan Lensing and Austin Harvey, have started scoring some goals, taking the pressure off of our defense.”
